The nails appear to be fine, but for some reason they don't work in my Campbell-Hausfeld framing nailer. Longer nails work fine, but this shorter nail causes the gun to jamb. The nail gun is listed to work with these nails, but it doesn't. So I had to revert back to using 10d nails.

Senco HN250 Joist Hanger Nailer Review

Senco HN250 Joist Hanger Nailer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I only recently acquired this nailer so I can't offer much advice on its use and durability. In essence, what Senco has done is re-purpose the pneumatic driver from their Palm nailer by adding an extended nose piece, magazine, and handle. If you expect it to drive a nail in one hit, like a standard nailgun, you'll be surprised. The way you use this thing is to insert the point of the nail (which protrudes about 1/4" from the nosepiece)into the hole in a metal joist hanger and push down. This activates the Palm-Nailer powerhead which proceeds to administer consecutive hammer blows to the nailhead until it is fully driven. The powerhead then stops automatically. This process is pretty quick and certainly an improvement over using your fingers and a hammer.
One thing that was a challenge for me is figuring out what nails to use. The user manual says to "use only genuine Senco fasteners...". But, alas, there are no Senco part numbers I could find for this type of nailgun. I had to work with a hardware supplier who had to contact his Senco rep twice before being told that this gun can use any "...31-35 degree joist hanger nails". Further research revealed that the correct specs are: "35 degree paper strip collated metal connector nails of .131", .148", .162" in diameter and either 1.5" or 2.5" in length. Nails can be either bright nickel finish or hot dipped galvanized". I have successfully fired Bostich galvanized StrapShot Metal connector nails 1.5" x .148" and 2.5" x .162" in my gun.
Although I don't have the similar Senco HN150 Joist Nail Hanger, my research leads me to believe that it will not handle the .162" diameter nails. That seems to be the major difference between it and the HN250 that is the subject of this review.
I hope this helps someone.

12/9/04 My company owns 3 of these and they really do have a strong shot. We had no problems with getting the nails to set in the toughest materials. Our problems came after 8 mos of use. One of the units began having frequent jams and then started misfiring on a consistent basis. I'm a little concerned because another one of our DA250B nailers has also become somewhat unpredictable and sometimes jams. I definitely recommend the DA250B over the Senco SFN 35 or any Bostich nailers. The Senco SFN 30 and 40 are OK units. My top pick however is the Dewalt Angled Finish Nailer D51275K. All of our crews like this nailer over any of the finish nailers we've used. (Bostich, Porter Cable DA250B, Senco SFN 35, 40, 30). I will say that for the infrequent user either The Porter Cable DA250B or Dewalt D51275K will perform nicely.
Note: We use these finish nailers primarily in oak but sometimes in wood species such as Brazilian Cherry, Mahogany, Rosewood, Maple and other exotic wood types.
Update 07/07/05: I have had each of the 3 Porter Cable DA250B in the shop for repair 1-3 times each within the 1st year. I think it's time to switch entirely to Dewalt. Porter Cable shouldn't mind now since it's owned by the same company now. Also I should add that the Dewalt finish nailer we have is still working flawlessly with the original driver and it gets more use than the Porter Cables.

Senco RoofPro 450 Coil Roofing Nailer Review

Senco RoofPro 450 Coil Roofing Nailer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought this nailer for a house addition and it worked great. Once in a while it wouldn't pull the next nail forward, but this happened in the first 10 minutes and didn't do that any more. Probably just the coil I was using at the time or just needed a little break-in.
Had very consistent nailing on architectural shingles and we even used it to nail valley flashings and ledger flashings.
Only one minor nail jamb in the whole roof project and that was a bad coil winding that caused it.
Case is excellent. Includes 1/4" NPT air fitting! Weight it just over 5 lbs. so its pretty light. The metal guards keep the housing from getting beat up while laying the nailer on the roof.
Compared to the Magnesium Bostitch I didn't notice much difference except you have flip two covers to load nails instead of just one. Not a big deal once you do it a few times.
Don't know how long it will last, but it works great so far.

A simple product, well made, well engineered - shipped miserably. When the row is broken up, you end up loading 1/2 rows. Still, they worked fine. I do wish they would just securely tape the box - all sides, even the bottom, then UPS cannot break into a brick. Placing it in a larger box with popped plastic bags was silly.

Porta-Nail 421P Pneumatic Floor Nailer with Both Line Nailer Shoe and Face Nailer Shoe Review

Porta-Nail 421P Pneumatic Floor Nailer with Both Line Nailer Shoe and Face Nailer Shoe
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This was my first attempt at installing hardwood floors. Purchasing a nail gun was a top priority. The market is limited but the few nailers out there all come with high marks. I chose this particular model based upon the few excellent reviews on this forum and the quick change option from floor to face nailing. The gun sits easily and quickly each time. The different types of nails/staples/ cleats receive their own praise but my personal choice was the porta nail. The nail itself appears to be stronger and heavier compared to the others. Your local Home Depot carries the porta nails, but not this particular nailer. This nailer is a tough find and have not been able to find anyone that stocks it, other than Amazon. The gun has worked flawlessly, and comes in a complete package. You have to purchase other shoes to fit flooring outside 3/4 inch. Since I will only install that type it is not a big deal, as of yet. Just tapping the gun is enough, no need to slam. Works great each time and have installed about 800 sq feet without a single problem. Makes a novice like me, into a more experienced novice in short time. Great purchase and was not jumping for joy at the price. Still, I was not forced to buy it and I do believe you get what you pay for.

Average Reviews:

First I would like to say I absolutely love Ridgid tools. I have been buying/using them for 30 years when they only made plumbing tools. This is the first Ridgid neumatic nailer I have bought. Maybe I just got a bad one but this thing would make a better hammer to drive finish nails than to use it correctly. This thing jams within every 5 pulls of the trigger sometimes twice in a row! It got so bad I started saving the 2 1/2 nails in a baggie and now it's almost full! Before you think it's "this or that" I tried every pressure setting, hose/coupler size combination and of course oiled it per the manual.
Not only does it jam but it has a quick release "nose" where supposedly you open and just pull out the nail; Wrong!
You have to use a "vice-grip" locked onto the nail to pull it out! I have a Bostich 18g and I can't remember it jamming on me.
The worst part is the life time warranty, I e-mailed Ridgid and they won't even respond!! I seriously am thinking of switching brand loyalty over to Milwaukee!

Cepco Tool QuikJack QJ1 Flooring/Construction Jack Review

Cepco Tool QuikJack QJ1 Flooring/Construction Jack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Cepco floor jack is a fantastic tool if you are installing hardwood flooring and want really tight joints in those areas next to a wall where you cannot get a flooring nailer. Instead of using screwdrivers, chisels, or wedges to force the flooring together, the floor jack simply presses it into place with no bother and no fuss.
I recommend using a 2x4 or 2x6 at least 36" long against the wall that you are going to press against to keep from damaging the wall or pushing a single stud out of place. The wall jack can generate a lot of force and in the hands of a careless installer it could dislocate a wall or partition.
While this tool is designed primarily for installing hardwood flooring, creative carpenters will undoubtedly find many was to use this tool to precisely move framing members. It is worth every penny that I paid for it.

Join flooring with ease! Use over any surface! Squeeze last board! Push, pull, bend, or straighten virtually anything on your jobsite. No more GAPS! Slide jack over any length of 2 in. x 4 in. for working away from wall or brace, wind crank, fasten board, pick 2" x 4" up and do it again - jack stays on 2" x 4". Jack locks itself to 2" x 4". Jack holds work in place, HANDS FREE! 2" x 4" floats over top of work, no need to cut or fasten 2" x 4" extension. To pull in last boards requires .25" gap between last board and wall. Porta-Nails 402P Porta-Nailer Manual Flooring Cleat Nailer Review

Porta-Nails 402P Porta-Nailer Manual Flooring Cleat Nailer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the 402P Porta-Nailer and 10,000 nails. Just finished installing 740 sf. of 3/4" Red Birch hardwood. No adjustment was required on the nailer as mentioned in an earlier review - nor could I see how one would adjust this nailer.
I nailed until the cartridge was empty every single time - no problem. I actually liked the ratcheting mechanism, despite reading poor reviews about this. The ratcheting mechanism allows you to take smaller swings when in a closet or close to the wall - allowing you to get one and possibly two extra rows nailed before hand nailing was necessary. Be careful when nailing close to a wall. I was a bit careless at first and took some good chunks out of the drywall when nailing close to the wall.
The nailer worked flawlessly. I averaged 75 sf/1000 nails with 3 1/4" wide flooring on a 6" nailing schedule. The box of 10,000 nails did come with the corners a bit crunched, which meant broken rows of nails, but I was able to feed the broken rows into the nailer and use them all up with no problems. I did not get a single jamb in the entire 740 sf. All nails drove flush, absolutely none sticking out.
I found that most nails would set with two swings. You could do it in one swing if you wanted, but I found that a weaker swing followed by one last hard swing seemed to pull the floor together a bit tighter. It was still necessary to pry some of the warped boards over with a pinch bar. This nailer won't straighten out the severely warped boards.
I found it neccessary to hand nail the first and last 12" due to the geometry of this nailer. Note that I did not order the face nailer. I did all of my face nailing by hand.
My only beef was that the wooden handle on the hammer was extremely rough - would rip your hand apart in no time - very poorly done in my opinion. I found it necessary to buff the handle smooth with a flap sandpaper wheel before using it. I would recommend that you spend the 10-15 minutes to do this before using the hammer. The rubber tip on the nailer came off once during the job, but was easy to pop back on.
If I had to do it again, I would certainly buy this nailer and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. I shopped around and the nails and nailer were significantly cheaper (about 60%) of the price of purchasing them locally. This is my first hardwood floor install and I found it relatively easy to install. Note that I also used a table saw + miter saw to install the hardwood.

These nails are not of the quality necessary for the Porter-Cable Finish Nailer that they are typically advertised with (FN250A). They sometimes came out 2 at a time, not at all, or caused the nailer to jam. I called Porter-Cable, and acquired their nails, and the problems went away. I would not recommend these nails, especially for this nailer.

I bought this gun about a year ago. It's great when you are fastening joist hangers on decks, truss ties, floor truss hangers. Man this kicks too. Careful when you use it cause it can shock your wrist. Makes my framing days alot faster when I am build a new home. It's very light and small enough to get into tight spots. I like how safety works on it. And loading is pretty nice too. This gun is worth having if you frame alot houses or build alot decks. Time it saves is worth the cost. Would buy again.

I bought this stapler- actually, its predecessor that shot shorter staples- for some cabinet making chores. It turned out to be a lot more useful that I thought. I've used it for attaching cedar shingle siding, making shipping crates, attaching window jamb extensions and a lot of other little tasks. It's surprising how often you have to nail some thin material, and need something that won't just pull through. The 18 gauge staples are as small as a brad, but hold thin materials like a roofing nail. Very handy, and the combination of PC quality and customer support is a winner, too.

Bought this at the orange store and boy am I glad I did. This thing works wonders when driving nails in tight quarters. I also have the Ridgid round head framing nailer but there was no way I could use that thing in spaces < 12". It makes quick work out of 16D galv commons and they go in smooth. I have my comp set at 100 psi (too lazy to lower it cuz of my framing nailer) but I'm sure it'll work at 60 psi or lower. I'll probably use this thing when working on the deck with those awkward shots.
The only thing to watch out for is some minor recoil if you don't have a firm handle on the unit (i.e. trying to use it with just a thumb and 3 fingers). This could throw your hand into some protruding nails on the opposite surface. I found that out the hard way while working in the crawl space with nails showing from the floor above about 1-2 inches away.
Also the swivel connector was a nice touch to make the hose line less troublesome. Add to that a 3 year warranty and a lifetime service agreement (need to register to get it) and it becomes a must have! Did I mention it's under [...] ?
