Stanley Bostitch HFM-4 59-Ounce Graphite Flooring Mallet Review

I've installed several hardwood floors using a rental hammer and nailer (air assisted). I made the mistake of trying out a dead-blow hammer on one job but that's another story. Don't waste your time. I've invested in a good stapler now, and recently this hammer. It's perfectly designed for the hardwood installation, it has a great feel, and the extra weight in the head helps close gaps. Go with this hammer without any doubts. In my opinion it's the best tool for the job.

Bostitch SB150SLBC-1 3/4-Inch to 1-1/2-Inch Cap Stapler Kit Review

Bostitch SB150SLBC-1 3/4-Inch to 1-1/2-Inch Cap Stapler Kit
Average Reviews:

I'm just starting a roofing company and Lord knows that if there's a good value to be had, I'll go for it. Thus was my mindset when purchasing this cap stapler in a kit with the RN46-1 roofing nailer. My crew's used it to paper 1 roof and have driven roughly 2,000 caps. The only thing I have to compare it to is the Hitachi cap nailer. It's better then hand bangin', but leaves a little to be desired.
The gun is light, but it's also a little front-heavy - much like the RN46-1. It does take some getting used to. That aside, the gun seems to be reliable. There were no jams with the 2,000 caps driven, except when one of my guys forgot to remove the cord that keeps the caps in line. When that happens, you best have a pair of needle nose pliers handy.
This is definitely a time (and money) saving tool. Caps can't be driven quite as fast as with the Hitachi, but can be driven about as fast as I've seen most nailers go in the course of normal work. Driven too fast, the staples don't sink all the way down. The gun is quick and easy to load, which is a good thing, since you can only load 100 caps and staples at a time. Overall, the Bostitch and Hitachi are probably dead even for the amount of time it takes to load a similar number of caps.
At half the price of the Hitachi, the Bostitch is hard to pass up. I like the fact that you don't waste so many caps. (Read some reviews on the Hitachi and you'll know what I mean.) And I LOVE the fact that it's no big deal if the Bostitch caps get wet. If you've got extremely fast nailers, you may want to suck up the cost of the Hitachi and its caps. However, most people should find the Bostitch to be a welcome change from some of the drawbacks of the other.
4 Stars - Good Product, Good Value. One star deduction for the slightly awkward balance and limited number caps it can hold.

Stanley Interlock Self-Retracting Utility Knife with Two Cutting Depths (10189C) Review

Not long ago I needed a utility knife to cut through some cardboard for a project I was working on. Stanley makes fairly good quality products; they might not be the best, but they do the job with few if any problems. Also, Stanly products are made in the USA. So, I purchased this utility knife from a local hardware store. It worked well and with the secure interlock feature, I didn't have any worries about having the blade malfunction. I've used the blade on other occasions besides that day cutting cardboard and I like that the handle is a bright orange because it makes the knife easy to locate. Highly recommended.

Bostitch RH-S8DR131-HQ Hurriquake 21-Degree 2-1/2-by-0.131-Inch Plastic Collated Stick Framing Nails, 4000 per Box

From some of the reviews from 2006 and 2007, it seems there were quality problems or counterfeits at that time, but the box of nails I received in May 2008 had none of the problems described. The nails appeared to be of high quality and were uniform.
Houses in Hawaii often have open beam construction, so I had a carpenter nailgun the nails at all structural joints, then had him install hurricane straps for good measure. The whole house took about 1/4 of the box, or about $15 worth of Hurriquake nails.
I also had a heat-reflecting titanium-oxide elastomeric roof coating applied to the roof because it was half the price of a traditional reroofing. This made the roof fireproof, blocks out almost all the heat so we do not need to use the air conditioner very much (it used to be like living in a toaster oven), and glues down the shingles so that the roof is windproof.
I showed the Hurriquake nails and hurricane straps to the insurance company, and they immediately dropped my homeowners insurance by $50 per year, so basically, IT IS LIKE THE WHOLE BOX OF HURRIQUAKE NAILS WAS FREE, and I save $50 a year every year from now on. Some people have reduced or canceled their hurricane insurance, which is typically $1,000 to $2,000 per year. I bought more boxes and gave nails away to neighbors... because I do not want their roofs flying into my house if we have a hurricane! Everyone is happy because they feel more secure and reduced their insurance costs, and the nails cost me next to nothing.
This is the kind of seemingly small unseen thing that makes a huge difference. Ed Sutt, the inventor of the HurriQuake nail, is a genius! No wonder this was Popular Science Magazine's Innovation of the Year for 2006.

Every now and then a special product comes along and turns the construction market on its head. The Bostitch Hurriquake™ Nail, designed to withstand the most prolific hurricanes and violent earthquakes, is one of those products. Not all nails are created equal, and many are simply not tough enough to do battle with Mother Nature when She really brings it on.
When Bostitch set out to develop the world's most advanced sheathing nail, he focused on enhancing the head and the shaft. What he came up with won Popular Science's 2006 Innovation of the Year honor. Welcome to the next generation of nails.

The HeadThe Hurriquake's head is 25% larger than traditional sheathing nails. Why? Hurricane force winds create a powerful vacuum-like phenomenon called uplift that often rips standard nail heads through roof sheathing. The typical result after a big storm is an insurance and construction disaster: hundreds of houses without roofs, and many without walls, too. Thanks to the enlarged head, Hurriquake nails can withstand uplift forces of a whopping 271 pounds per square foot, substantially more than other nails. The head also has two other features worth mentioning. First, every head is marked for identification during code inspection (HQ1 or HQ2, depending on which thickness you're using). This should save contractors a lot of hassle. Second, the patented design prevents you from driving nails in too deep. The benefit of this is significantly less counter-sinking and pulling through in bad conditions.

Shank DesignDiscussions of nail shaft design don't normally excite, but the Hurriquake's shank is such a departure from the norm that it deserves a serious look. Typical nails are smooth near the bottom, and consequently they pull out when under stress. Hurriquake nails, on the other hand, feature a special ring geometry that grabs hold of the wood when pulled. Hurriquake nails are rated to hold in gusts up to 170 mph. and are strong enough to outperform Miami-Dade County's code. Regular nails also have a series of parallel rings on the upper part of the shank. Unfortunately, these rings create voids (or spaces) in the sheathing they're meant to hold in place, making the nails prone to losing their hold or breaking in hairy conditions. By contrast, the Hurriquake's shaft actually fills voids in sheath ing, thereby increasing hold strength.

Earthquakes Hurricanes have gotten the lion's share of media attention recently, but it shouldn't be overlooked that the Hurriquake is also designed to minimize structural damage wrought by earthquakes. After a major earthquake, it's common for structures to lean or droop. That's because earthquakes put a huge amount of stress at an angle perpendicular to the nail, a phenomenon known as shear load. When the load becomes too much for the nails to bear, they bend or snap and the structure fails. With Hurriquake nails, the chances of this happening are minimal. Hurriquake's "ring shank" stops halfway up to leave the middle of the nail, which takes the biggest beating during an earthquake, at its maximum thickness. This additional strength offers up to 50% more resistance to earthquakes forces.

No malfunctions other than nailing down plywood so fast I got ahead of my insulation coverage...ooops, will drill holes and fill that spot with foam... and will be ordering more nails when needed...

Bostitch SL1838BC Cap Stapler

This cap stapler was purchased and used once stapling around 50 caps. On the 2nd day, it would no longer shoot caps or staples, only blow air through the trigger. Amazon no longer sells this tool so they can't replace it. Bostich told me I must pay to ship it to them to have it serviced because it blew an o-ring. This gun is mostly plastic, looks and feels cheap and fails after 50 caps. According to Bostich, "Designed to be the preferred method of securing felt, house wrap and thin foam." I use a 20 year old bostich coil nailer that has never been oiled and it doesn't even misfire!

This is my first nailer purchase, though not my first experience with a nailer. The first thing that I noticed upon opening the box is that this tool is a quality product! All the parts and pieces fit wonderfully. The magnesium body makes this a very light weight tool which I can really appreciate. There's no need to oil the tool either, so maintenance is virtually non-existent. The magazine is very easy to load, and you can see how full it is while in operation. The nailer comes pre-fitted with a quarter-inch air connector (many are not, which means a trip to the hardware store just to make those other nailers complete). Two really nice touches that make this nailer stand out from many...it comes with a supply of nails (no need to order 4000 nails, just to begin your first job) and it includes a great plastic case for the tool, with room to hold a supply of nails. I don't think I could be happier with a finish nailer!

Average Reviews:

The Bostitch narrow crown staple gun I have (SX1838K) takes 7/32" crown staples. The 3/16" crown dimension for these staples is too narrow and will not fit. Searching on-line I can't find any Bostitch 18 gauge staples with a 3/16" crown dimension. If that is true the title should remove the "Bostitch Style" text.
I ordered the product refurbished and there were about 100-200 staples missing. That would have been OK if they worked because I wouldn't need the full 5,000.
I ordered the staple gun at the same time and it just said "narrow crown" so I assumed the "Bostitch Style" staples would fit. Bad assumption. I would return them, but the 3/16" dimension was in the title so I screwed up.

Great design by Stanley so you don't have to take it apart to change blades. The little storage area for blades is neat too.
The blade change isn't totally intuitive so it would help if they put something like this on their packaging: "Push down black retractable blade button and push all the way forward past the detent so the button stays pushed down. Then push in the silver side button and pull blade out."
Only reason I gave it 4 stars is that I used it to cut some ceiling tile and rubbed off a big section of paint on the handle near the blade; they should have nickel or chrome plated that section instead of painting it.

Standard nails can bleed through paint or cause streaks on your stain grade work. These high quality stainless steel nails eliminate these worries.Stainless Steel nails are most often used in projects where they are exposed to weather or in highly humid areas. However, woods such as Redwood and Western Cedar have high levels of tannic acid, which can cause staining with standard nails.Pressure treated lumber can have similar problems due the chemical reaction between the copper salts used in the treating process and the commonly used galvanized nail.Using Stainless Steel nails can help avoid having to replace or refinish your project because of discoloration or fastener failure.Furthermore, stainless steel nails have a lateral strength 20 higher than ordinary plain steel nails; stiffness is about the same.

It does not specify at all in the description but this hose is made in the USA. There are a number of Polyurethane hoses out there for about the same cost but many are made overseas. I always look for quality products made domestically. Now for the product. It is indeed lightweight. I doubt it would be noticable if you were on a scaffold and had the entire 50' of hose hanging down. It is simply that light. For those of you who are using rubber hoses, the difference is dramatic. The fact that it can be repaired on a job site in a flash is just a bonus. They sell the repair kits at Amazon too and if you are like me and have trouble finding Bostitch products locally, I suggest buying a couple kits to have on hand and hope you don't need to use them. The hose ends are reinforced and are decent quality. Although the hose is yellow, it is translucent and you can easily see through and see if there is condensate or debris in the line which could cause damage down the line. I just may buy a second hose for more reach or get a Goodyear rubber hose (GoodYear 045 3/8-Inch x 50 Safety Yellow Rubber Hose 3/8 -Inch by 50-Feet 250 PSI With 1/4-Inch Ends)
for the 1st 50' and save a few $. It is on Amazon for $19.99 and is also made in the USA. I would rather have two 50' hoses than a 100' line as there are certainly times when I would not need a 100' and would only use one hose.
